Brisbane : Virender Sehwag has slammed the quality of socks provided to the Indian cricket team by the BCCI for the poor form the boys are in ever since they landed in Australia.
“We are trying to pull our socks in every match but as you can see, we are not able to pull them up. Clearly something is wrong with the socks,” he explained at the post-match presentation here, after the loss to Sri Lanka.
Gautam Gambhir chipped in. “Look at Cricket Australia. Their main sponsor is Vodafone where the little pup actually gets the right quality socks for the little girl. That kind of dedication is unfortunately missing in BCCI and our support staff.”
However, captain M S Dhoni said it is wrong on part of the seniors to blame socks for the poor run. “You know, the juniors are trying to get into the shoes of the seniors, you know. So every match, you know, Sachin paaji, Sehwag and Gambhir have to give up, you know, their shoes and socks. The problem, you know, is that the seniors are too slow in taking their socks off.”
Taking umbrage at Dhoni’s remarks, Sehwag in a clear sign of dissent in the team, accused MSD of throwing his bat around, without showing any responsibility. “Helicopter shot India me chalte honge, Indian helicopter cannot fly in Australia. Dhoni should know that,” said Sehwag.
Sehwag also took exception to Wasim Akram calling him “the most unfit player in the Indian team”. At a press conference, India’s vice captain distributed CDs of a function some years ago in which he had poked fun at Shoaib Akhtar and alleged Akram is taking revenge.
Sehwag has reportedly written to the Government of India to take up the matter at the highest level. Reacting swiftly, the Portugal ambassador to India was summoned by the Foreign office this morning where External Affairs minister S M Krishna told him in no uncertain terms that Wasim Akram ought to be reined in.
“This is interfering in India’s internal matter,” Krishna is reported to have conveyed to the Portuguese ambassador, who apparently kept insisting politely, that to the best of his knowledge, there isn’t a former player by name Wasim Akram in the country’s football team. Tenali Rama has learnt that Portugal has however promised its good offices to probe further and take necessary steps.
